A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck the eastern region of Afghanistan, specifically the Kunar province, late Sunday night, causing widespread devastation.
The earthquake shook areas from Kabul to Islamabad in Pakistan, with the epicenter located approximately 17 miles from Jalalabad, Afghanistan’s fifth-largest city.
Due to the region's remoteness and poor infrastructure, the exact casualty figures are difficult to confirm, but initial reports estimate over 800 people have died, with 2,800 injured among various affected areas including the provinces of Laghman and Nangarhar.
Several villages have been completely destroyed, and many buildings, primarily made of concrete and brick or mud bricks and wood, have suffered significant structural damage.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with World Health Organization teams and medical personnel actively assisting in hospitals and health facilities.
Helicopters have been deployed to transport casualties and navigate landslide-blocked roads, while officials continue assessing the urgency of health and shelter requirements.
The earthquake has exacerbated existing vulnerabilities in one of the world’s poorest countries, which already faces challenges from natural disasters due to its position near several tectonic plate fault lines.
Afghanistan has previously experienced deadly earthquakes, such as the series in 2023 that killed over 1,000 people.
The international community expresses concern and support as Afghanistan copes with this latest natural disaster.
