A motorcyclist who nearly died after a life-changing crash has visited the Scottish Ambulance Service's ScotSTAR base in Paisley to meet and thank the staff who gave him a second chance at life.
In April this year, Gary Viljoen was driving his motorcycle in Dollar with a friend when the brakes failed, causing him to crash into a tree at speed.
His friend called for an ambulance, and a team of SAS paramedics, advanced practitioners and an Emergency Medical Retrieval Service team came to their aid.
Gary was airlifted to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital with significant injuries.
After four months in hospital, two of which were spent in a coma, and with the help of physical therapy, he has made a swift recovery and is now walking with the assistance of crutches.
His wife Julie Viljoen recalled the terrifying moment they nearly lost Gary twice after he arrived at the QEUH.
She expressed eternal gratitude to the first responders, noting that their careful work ensured her husband would eventually walk and hold his children again.
Gary, Julie and daughter Storm personally met Joel Symonds, Arran Keir and Julie Cathcart at the SAS ScotSTAR base.
Gary stated he could never thank the team enough for all they did that day, feeling grateful for the help from medical teams and the wonderful people who stopped at the roadside.
He acknowledged the team kept his wife informed, kept him stable and gave him a second chance at life—a day he'll never forget for many reasons.
