John Lloyd, the retired British player and former British No. 1, has announced his immediate retirement from BBC Wimbledon commentary after nearly three decades with the broadcaster. The 71-year-old signed off after commentating on the men's doubles final, in which Finnish-British pair Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten claimed victory with a 7-6 7-6 triumph over Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic.

The announcement came moments after the final point, delivered by fellow commentator Todd Woodbridge during the presentation ceremony. "Before we get to the presentation worth just saying something about you Lloyd-y," Woodbridge told Lloyd and viewers. Lloyd responded with "Wow don't need to" before Woodbridge added, "It might be the last chance that I get to sit in the comms box with you it's been an absolute pleasure."

Chris Badnam also paid tribute, saying "For me too John John's last Wimbledon," to which Lloyd replied, "Thank you Yeah it's very nice of you guys to see that."

Lloyd later revealed the decision had been brewing for some time. "I was going to stop last year," he explained. "But then it was one of those years I was on the big courts more than I expected and I had a lot of studio time so I thought I'll give it one more summer."

Reflecting on his lengthy tenure, Lloyd said, "I can't even tell you whether it's 25 years now or 27 because I'm not very good at dates. But I think I must have started when it was black-and-white TV." He added, "I've got no regrets. I've been a lucky guy. It feels strange to be doing my last match but I'm happy because it's been a really good ride."

Lloyd's departure marks part of broader changes to BBC's Wimbledon coverage. Andrew Castle will call his final men's singles final on Sunday, whilst Jo Durie has also been confirmed as departing the tournament.
