Mirra Andreeva was in tears during her post-match press conference at Wimbledon after suffering a shock defeat in the second round. The No. 5 seed fell to world No. 38 Barbora Krejcikova, the 2024 Wimbledon champion, losing 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 in a hard-fought contest that lasted nearly three hours on Centre Court.

The 19-year-old's defeat came just three weeks after she won her maiden Grand Slam title at the French Open. She had harboured hopes of joining an elite group including Maureen Connolly, Evonne Goolagong, Chris Evert and Steffi Graf, who won both Roland Garros and Wimbledon before their 20th birthdays. Those aspirations were now extinguished.

Andreeva demonstrated remarkable resilience throughout the match, capturing the opening set and saving multiple match points in a dramatic ninth game of the deciding set. When Krejcikova served for the match at 5-3, Andreeva saved six match points, showing her characteristic fighting spirit. However, Krejcikova broke her serve in the subsequent game to secure victory.

Andreeva's frustration surfaced during play itself, hurling her racket from the baseline to her chair as her desperate attempt to retrieve Krejcikova's net-cord winner sailed long.

Former World No. 4 Tim Henman expressed sympathy for Andreeva's emotional reaction during the press conference. "It's so tough to see that the emotion after such a difficult defeat on Centre Court," he said. "You can see how much it means to her. Roland Garros was just incredible. She's an amazing talent." Henman acknowledged the particular difficulty of young players facing media scrutiny immediately after painful losses. "It's so difficult to see when she's so young in front of the cameras," he added.

Following the match, Krejcikova praised her opponent's fighting qualities. "The atmosphere was great and we've been fighting for almost three hours. What a match. She is such a young and unique player - she has everything in front of her," she said.
