NHS England chiefs have issued a letter urging hospitals and primary care providers to boost staff flu jab rates, which have fallen from 74% in 2019-20 to just 37.8% in 2024-25.
Last winter saw nearly 8,000 flu deaths in England, underscoring the vaccine's importance in preventing hospitalisations.
Uptake has declined steadily, reaching levels not seen since 2010-11, with mental health trusts recording the lowest staff vaccination at 33%.
NHS England demands all trusts improve uptake by at least five percentage points and assign executives responsible for vaccination efforts.
Covid-19 vaccines will not be included in this year's staff vaccination program.
Concerns also extend to public vaccination rates, especially among children and pregnant women.
