A woman from Worcestershire has lost a staggering 40% of her body weight after taking the weight-loss drug Mounjaro, an experience she credits with completely changing her life.
Beverley Cuddy, 63, began taking the medication in April 2023 and has since lost approximately eight stone (51kg), explaining that she felt her life was 'on the wind down' before she started the drug.
She said Mounjaro, which makes people feel fuller for longer, helped her save money by changing her spending habits, noting that she no longer spends as much at supermarkets or on takeaways.
This perspective comes as the drug's price could see a significant increase, with the highest dose potentially jumping from £122 to £330 per month.
Ms.
Cuddy acknowledged that while the price hike would have frightened her as a first-time user, she believes people should look at 'price versus value.' Her story highlights the profound personal impact of the medication, which she says helped her overcome illness and dependency on others, and brought back her optimism.
However, the price increase has raised serious concerns within the medical community.
Dr.
Leyla Hannbeck, head of the Independent Pharmacies Association, has issued a stark warning that the rising cost could drive people to purchase the drug from illegitimate websites, including those in China.
She cautioned that these online products may not be legitimate and could be dangerous, advising people to seek advice from a pharmacist who can prescribe a legitimate substitute.
Ms.
Cuddy herself admitted she felt 'fortunate' to have been among the first to access the drug when it was more affordable, calling it 'expensive but not compared to surgery.' Her story serves as both a testament to the drug's efficacy and a cautionary tale about the potential dangers associated with its increasing cost and availability.
