A collision involving a lorry and a car on the M1 northbound in Leicestershire caused significant travel disruption on Friday afternoon.
All traffic was briefly held between Junction 21 for the M69 and Junction 22 Coalville Ashby for the A50.
Traffic monitoring services reported delays of around an hour, with queues stretching for up to 8 miles.
Emergency services, including traffic officers from National Highways, responded to the scene.
Traffic was eventually released and all lanes reopened, but congestion continued to build on both the northbound and southbound carriageways.
Drivers were advised to allow for extra travel time while the incident was cleared.
