Martin O'Neill senses Rangers resurgence as Celtic boss issues telling title defence confession

Martin O'Neill has warned that Celtic face a tough challenge defending their Premiership title next season, with both Rangers and Hearts dramatically strengthening their squads ahead of the new campaign.

Despite guiding the Hoops to both the Premiership and Scottish Cup this term, O'Neill has issued a telling confession about the competitive threat posed by rivals. Celtic clinched the league title on the final day of the season against Hearts, but the narrowness of that victory appears to have prompted reflection from the manager.

"I think we're in for a tough old time this season," O'Neill stated. "I think Rangers will get stronger and Hearts won't go down without a fight, there's no question about that." The manager highlighted how his opponents have been gradually closing the gap. "I have felt this I must admit that every single time that we played the matches you give the team the respect that they deserve. Teams I thought were getting closer to Celtic than perhaps ever before, certainly in recent times."

Hearts have already moved decisively in the transfer window, securing seven new signings under new manager Sabri Guendouz, while Rangers appointed Derek McInnes as boss and swiftly entered the transfer market themselves.

O'Neill has emphasised his intention to strengthen Celtic's squad during pre-season to meet the challenge ahead. The manager will implement tactical adjustments, speaking about merging recent tactical traits with elements from his earlier work at Parkhead, including a renewed focus on set-piece effectiveness.

Celtic face Dundee on August 3 in their Premiership opener, with Champions League playoff matches scheduled for August 18 and 19. The Celtic boss has stressed the importance of augmenting the squad as they bid to retain their crown against increasingly formidable opposition from rivals who are determined to end their dominance.
