Nottingham Forest manager Ange Postecoglou remains without a Premier League victory since succeeding Nuno Espirito Santo, after his side fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Sunderland on Saturday.
The Australian coach, who has now lost three of his opening five matches in charge at the City Ground, was visibly furious at a decision he labelled an 'absolute howler' by the referee, suggesting it significantly impacted the result.
Despite this external frustration, Postecoglou did not spare his own players, publicly taking aim at his side's defending which he suggested was equally culpable for the loss.
The result continues a challenging start for Postecoglou, who led Spurs to a Europa League triumph in May but had a difficult Premier League campaign last season, finishing just one place above the relegation zone.
A tough run of fixtures saw his first four Forest games all played away, including a loss to last season's runners-up Arsenal and a commendable draw against a defensively solid Burnley side.
The only real prior disappointment, according to analysis, was the Carabao Cup defeat to Swansea.
Against Sunderland, Forest struggled to convert opportunities, creating 'chance after chance' in the second half but finding Sunderland’s goalkeeper Robin Roefs in inspired form, or simply failing to hit the target.
Although the winless streak now stands at five games, which is acknowledged as a poor start for any head coach, analysts noted signs of encouragement, suggesting that if the team can maintain their positive moments, results ‘will start to come.’ Sunderland, meanwhile, are enjoying a superb start to their return to the top flight after an eight-year absence, looking like they ‘belong’ after soaking up Forest’s pressure to secure their first away Premier League win since 2017.
