While King Charles is the reigning British monarch, Princess Diana, his first wife, is reported to have had a more aristocratic royal bloodline connecting her deeply to English royalty.
Diana Spencer, daughter of John Spencer, Earl Spencer, and the Hon Mrs Frances Shand Kydd, descends from English monarchs such as Henry VIII, King George III, King James II, and Mary Queen of Scots.
She is also a distant cousin of King Charles through shared ancestry via King Henry VII’s daughter Margaret Tudor.
Conversely, King Charles's lineage shifted when Queen Anne died in 1714, resulting in the House of Hanover and later the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha ascending — largely of German nobility descent.
This means that although Charles has centuries of royal blood from Germanic roots, Diana’s ancestry is more closely linked to English monarchs, giving her a more traditional claim to English royal blood.
This distinction highlights the complex tapestry of royal genealogy and the historical shifts that shaped the current monarchy.
