San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh says he used a poor choice of words in the buildup to a heated confrontation with Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen following the Jaguars' 26-21 victory on Sunday.
The two had to be separated after the match, with Saleh reportedly telling Coen he would 'end your life and fuck your world up', whilst Coen responded, 'Keep my name out of your fucking mouth'.
The incident occurred a few days after Saleh had stated the Jags were good at legally stealing signs from opposing teams.
On Tuesday, Saleh clarified he had meant those comments as a compliment, stating that in his heart, he was genuinely trying to give praise.
Saleh acknowledged using the wrong choice of words but emphasised his recognition of the hours that must be spent to build formations and find indicators to give players chances to be successful.
He expressed his belief that Coen is doing a really nice job, noting the football team is playing and taking on his personality, with the offensive line playing violently and running backs running hard.
Both teams have had successful starts to the season, owning identical 3-1 records.
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked which coaches could beat Saleh in a fight, laughing and selecting Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell.
Shanahan added that Saleh is usually too nice but seemed like someone struck a chord recently, describing the situation as comical in retrospect.
The confrontation has sparked discussions about competitive tensions in professional football.
