Fabio Fognini has ended his 17-year Wimbledon streak following comments from John McEnroe that prompted the Italian tennis star to reconsider his career. After competing in the opening round last year, where the 39-year-old forced the match against Carlos Alcaraz to a deciding fifth set, McEnroe offered his assessment while working for BBC coverage.

"I almost hope that Fognini doesn't play anymore because I'm not sure he can play any better than that," McEnroe said at the time. The seven-time Grand Slam champion's words appeared to influence Fognini's thinking as he consulted with his wife, former tennis player Flavia Pannetta.

Pannetta, who retired from professional tennis in 2015, supported his potential retirement. "I hope he finishes with the wonderful feelings of the match with Alcaraz," she told Corriere della Sera. "He was very good. I am proud. For me it is as if he had won. If he were to continue he would risk ruining that moment."

When asked whether she had directly advised her husband, Pannetta explained: "In his own way I am his mirror. I do not lie to him. But the choice is his."

Shortly after McEnroe's comments, Fognini confirmed his retirement from professional tennis. Rather than fade completely, the 39-year-old embarked on an unexpected career change. He appeared on the Italian version of Dancing With the Stars, finishing in third place.

"I learned a new job because in the end it was my job for three months," Fognini said of the experience. "I met fantastic people and presented myself in a way that was unfamiliar. And as if that weren't enough I also won. So I'm happy to show that side of Fabio Fognini that few knew."

Reflecting on the programme, he added: "It wasn't just dance. It was a journey within myself. I've discovered a new Fabio. I've taken off the armour." His wife, Flavia Pannetta, believed in the venture before he did.
