Madison Keys won the Eastbourne title for a third time on Saturday, defeating Germany's Tatjana Maria 7-5 6-4 to gain momentum heading into Wimbledon. The American, seeded No 2 at the grass-court event on England's south coast, overcame the world No 112 in 93 minutes despite sweltering temperatures. The 31-year-old's victory marks her first title since claiming her maiden grand slam crown at the Australian Open last year. Keys joins an illustrious group of three-time Eastbourne champions alongside Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova. She will face compatriot Kayla Day in her first-round Wimbledon match on Tuesday, having never progressed beyond the quarter-finals at the All England Club.

However, Wimbledon's start brings concern for other competitors. Naomi Osaka's preparations received a significant setback after she retired at the start of the second set in the Bad Homburg Open final due to a foot injury. The four-time grand slam champion was trailing 6-1 1-0 to Karolina Muchova of Czechia when she withdrew. Osaka, seeded No 14 at Wimbledon, is scheduled to play Elsa Jacquemot in her opening match.

Britain's Emma Raducanu will not compete at Wimbledon after withdrawing on Sunday evening due to a stress fracture in her lower right leg. The No 30 seed underwent a final scan confirming the injury after managing a niggle throughout the week. Raducanu had been due to face Croatia's Antonia Ruzic on Court One on Monday. In a statement, she said: "I've done everything possible to try to get to the start line but after a final scan tonight the niggle I've been managing has developed into a stress fracture." She added: "Playing at Wimbledon in front of a home crowd means everything to me so this is really difficult to process." The 23-year-old 2021 US Open champion had attempted multiple practice sessions over the weekend to test her fitness but ultimately followed medical advice to withdraw.
