Beloved best selling book adapted into 'must watch' period drama now on Channel 4

Death Comes to Pemberley, based on P D James's 2011 bestseller, is a three-part drama adaptation now streaming on Channel 4. The series continues Austen's tale six years beyond Pride and Prejudice's conclusion with a darker twist, trading the author's trademark romance for a gripping whodunit mystery.

The story begins in June 1803 at Pemberley Manor during a ball that descends into chaos with Lydia Wickham's arrival. She insists her husband George has clashed with his travelling companion Captain Denny, resulting in Denny's murder. Death Comes to Pemberley unfolds as a mystery uncovering secrets and familial connections, featuring courtroom drama and exploring the impact on Darcy and Elizabeth's marriage.

The programme has been likened to Agatha Christie's books set within Austen's fictional world. The ensemble cast includes Jenna Coleman as Lydia, Eleanor Tomlinson as Georgiana Darcy, James Norton as Henry Alveston, and Penelope Keith as Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Tom Ward, who plays Colonel Fitzwilliam, appeared in the 1995 Pride and Prejudice adaptation.

Nearly eight million viewers tuned in when the drama first aired in 2013. Critics were enthusiastic, hailing it as perfect festive television. On IMDb, one reviewer applauded the way it handles Austen's source material with considerable care and respect.

Reviewers have focused on the cast, with fans arguing that while Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle will always be the definitive Darcy and Elizabeth, this adaptation has a stronger supporting cast. Standout performances came from Mr and Mrs Bennet, Lydia, Sir Selwyn Hardcastle, Georgiana Darcy and Alveston. All three episodes are streaming on Channel 4.
