Royal Family RECAP: Palace warned 'watch your back' after Harry and Meghan latest move
Buckingham Palace has been warned to watch their back after King Charles met with Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The monarch saw his grandchildren Archie, aged seven, and Lilibet, aged five, in a reunion earlier this month. It was the first time the children had seen Charles since Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022.
While the meeting has been interpreted as a sign of the thawing relationship between the King and his estranged son, it has sparked concern among royal observers. Daily Mail Royal Editor Rebecca English told the publication's podcast that the Palace needs to be vigilant about the Sussexes' intentions. "I think the Palace do need to be alive to the fact there is a lot of concern that meeting will be used as a way to inveigle themselves back in to this half in and half out role - not maybe in the short term but in the long term - and I think that is something people in the UK and around the world are deeply concerned about," she said.
English suggested the Palace went into the reunion with good intentions but expressed uncertainty about the Sussex side's motivations. "That's where they need to watch their back a bit," she added. The meeting, which lasted just over an hour, was reportedly successful and took place with few people knowing it was occurring.
The renewed contact comes at a time of reported tension between Harry and Meghan themselves. According to TalkTV pundit Kevin O Sullivan, Meghan is furious with her husband over his desire to pursue a half-in, half-out royal lifestyle. O Sullivan claimed that Queen Elizabeth II specifically banned this arrangement, famously stating "you're either in or you're out, there's no halfway house." He alleged that while the King might accommodate such an arrangement, other senior royals including William, Camilla, Anne, and Edward are opposed to it. O Sullivan further claimed that Meghan remains focused on an all-American future, while Harry desperately seeks to rebuild his life in Britain.
