The third Downton Abbey movie, The Grand Finale, was released in cinemas last year, yet much like the television series and previous films in the hit period drama, it felt somewhat like another cliffhanger. Lord and Lady Grantham had moved into the Dower House so Mary, who remains single, could run Downton Abbey herself into the 1930s. But is it really the end?

Creator Julian Fellowes has previously shared why it likely is, at least for now. The 76-year-old told interviewers last year that he wanted Downton Abbey to conclude before the rise of Nazis in the lead-up to World War II. Fellowes explained his reasoning behind this significant creative decision, citing a desire to protect both the story and his audience from venturing into darker historical territory.

"I wanted to leave at a time when that had not yet become apparent as a threat," Fellowes said. "I wanted to be sure that the public who'd followed their fortunes felt happy and satisfied to say goodbye to these people."

The creator's motivation extends beyond simply avoiding difficult subject matter. He emphasized the importance of providing closure and clarity to viewers who had invested years in the characters' journeys. Fellowes wanted audiences to understand the futures of these beloved characters and how they would navigate the dramatically changing world ahead.

"In other words, I felt they needed to have an indication of where they were all going and how they were all going to deal with the changing world," he stated. "It's no longer going to be a world of white tie and footmen—that was on its way out. So we needed to be sure that they would be okay."

This thoughtful approach to concluding the Downton Abbey saga reflects Fellowes' commitment to ending on a satisfying note rather than continuing into an era that would fundamentally alter the genteel world the series has chronicled. The decision suggests that any future installments in the franchise appear unlikely in the foreseeable future.
